Appearances can be… / Las Apariencias pueden ser…

Opening the door to our apartment we encountered glass on the floor, a broken window.  Our first thoughts were that a rock broke window or that burglars broke in, but this was the 12^th floor.  Then we looked at the stove: a charred pot and the remains of plastic bottles.  The neighbors had smelled the burning plastic and called the fire department.  I had wanted to boil our son’s baby bottles before a doctor’s appointment, best intentions gone bad when we rushed out the door.

Appearances can be deceiving.  My perceptions of a situation are often colored.  It may be that I’m not experiencing progress because I’ve been looking at a problem for so long that the image blurs.  It’s worth asking, “What is another way to view this?  What other perspectives are possible?”  Ask yourself more than once, several times, and write down the responses.  Then ask what would be the implications of applying that point of view.  You might be surprised at the new doors that open.

Al abrir la puerta de nuestro apartamento encontramos pedazos de vidrio en el piso, una ventana rota. Nuestros primeros pensamientos fueron que una roca rompió la ventana o que los ladrones irrumpieron, pero este fue el piso 12. Luego miramos la estufa: una olla carbonizada y los restos de unas botellas de plástico. Los vecinos habían olido el plástico ardiente y llamaron al Departamento de bomberos. Yo había querido hervir las botellas de nuestro bebé antes de la cita con el médico, las mejores intenciones que resultaron malas cuando nos apresuramos a salir.

Las apariencias pueden ser engañosas. Mis percepciones de una situación no son las únicas posibles. Puede ser que no estoy experimentando progreso porque he estado mirando un problema durante tanto tiempo que la imagen se difumina. Vale la pena preguntarse, “¿Cuál es otra manera de ver esto? ¿Qué otras perspectivas son posibles? ” Pregúntate a ti mismo más de una vez, varias veces, y anota las respuestas. Luego pregunte cuáles serían las implicaciones de aplicar ese punto de vista. Puede que te sorprende de las nuevas puertas que se abren.
