Needs vs. Wants / Necesidades vs. Deseos

Yesterday I was talking with a friend who believes she should move to a new home that would be closer to her work place.  She has a good list of reasons: fuel economy, less

chance of a traffic ticket, convenience of less travel time, and others.  The reasons make sense.  So, is moving to a new home a need or a want? One great question to ask: what would a new house give you?  If the answer is logistical (e.g. closer to work), ask again, what would that give you?  Keep going until you get to an emotion, like “it would give me more peace.”

On the other hand, one could ask: if you did not move, what would you be missing?  Perhaps a savings in gasoline costs.  Then ask: what else?  Try to get past the practical aspects to the heart.  Why does this really matter?  Psalm 23 says: “The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need…He leads me on the right path.”  Asking heart questions gives Jesus room to guide you.

Ayer estaba hablando con una amiga que cree que debería mudarse a un nuevo hogar que estaría más cerca de su lugar de trabajo. Tiene una buena lista de razones: economía de combustible, menos posibilidades de una multa de tráfico, comodidad de menos tiempo de viaje, y otros. Las razones tienen sentido. Entonces, ¿mudarse a un nuevo hogar es una necesidad o un deseo? Una gran pregunta será: ¿qué te daría una casa nueva? Si la respuesta es logística (por ejemplo, más cerca del trabajo), pregúntese de nuevo, ¿qué te daría eso? Sigue hasta que llegues a una emoción, como “me daría más paz“.

Por otro lado, uno podría preguntarse: si no se moviera, ¿qué me faltaría? Tal vez un ahorro en costos de gasolina. Entonces pregunte: ¿qué más? Trate de superar los aspectos prácticos para llegar al corazón. ¿Por qué me importa esto, de verdad? El Salmo 23 dice: “El Señor es mi Pastor; Tengo todo lo que necesito… Me guía por el camino correcto“. Hacer preguntas del corazón le da a Jesús espacio para guiarte.
