Rembrandt van Rijn is recognized as one of the greatest painters who ever lived. But he was not recognized while alive. He was misunderstood and incredibly disorganized with his finances, running up great debt and forgetting to cash checks paid to him for his work, which was inevitably undervalued. It was because there was one thing, only one thing, really important to him. Not his wife, not his son or daughter, not his friends: the only thing that was really important to him was to paint, to create.
He was advised to move to Italy, where his inspired giftedness would see a more positive response. He refused because he said that the light in rainy, foggy Amsterdam was just right for what he was trying to do. He saw things that few others could appreciate. It was all about the light.
The apostle John wrote often about light. He called Jesus the Light of the World. He said: “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead…” (3:19). Once, a religious leader, Nicodemus, went to visit Jesus at night. The imaging is unmistakable, he comes out of the darkness into light, the Light. In a very dark time, Jesus invites us into the light, to rest in Him. That is the really important thing, even beyond family, friends and finances. So what does it look like for you to enter the light, to rest in Jesus, today? Grace and peace to you as you seek Him.

Rembrandt van Rijn es reconocido como uno de los más grandes pintores que han vivido. Pero no fue reconocido mientras estaba vivo. Fue incomprendido e increíblemente desorganizado con sus finanzas, corriendo grandes deudas y olvidando cheques en efectivo que se le pagaron por su trabajo, que era inevitablemente infravalorado. Fue porque había una cosa, sólo una cosa, realmente importante para él. Ni su esposa, ni su hijo ni su hija, ni sus amigos: lo único que era realmente importante para él era pintar, crear.
Se le aconsejó mudarse a Italia, donde su talento inspirado vería una respuesta más positiva. Se negó porque dijo que la luz en un Ámsterdam lluviosa y nebulosa era la adecuada para lo que intentaba hacer. Vio cosas que pocos otros podían apreciar. Todo se trataba de la luz.
El apóstol Juan escribía a menudo acerca de la luz. Llamó a Jesús la Luz del Mundo. Dijo: “La luz ha venido al mundo, pero la gente amaba la oscuridad en su lugar…” (3:19). Una vez, un líder religioso, Nicodemo, fue a visitar a Jesús por la noche. La imagen es inconfundible, sale de la oscuridad hacia la luz, la Luz. En un tiempo muy oscuro, Jesús nos invita a la luz, a descansar en él. Eso es lo realmente importante, incluso más allá de la familia, amigos y finanzas.
