Peacemakers / Pacificadores

In 1978, Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty brokered by the United States.  At the signing, Jimmy Carter quoted a verse from the Bible: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9).  It was an extraordinary scene: a Jew, an Arab and a Christian standing together celebrating peace.  Of course, it did not last, just as the League of Nations failed after WWI, and the United Nations has been unable to stop wars following its charter in 1945.

We live in a time of troubles, division and stress.  Where can we find peace?  One person told me that with so much injustice we should not even be looking for peace, but trying to tear down the evil system and rebuild it with something better.

Peace is more than just lack of conflict and trouble.  The Hebrew word “Shalom” is a greeting that transmits a desire for wellbeing, security and completeness.  “Salam” transmits the same concept in Arabic, as does “Eirene” in Greek: Peace be with you.  That is the meaning when Jesus says “my peace I give you, not like the world gives” (John 14:27). 

So how can we work for peace in a world that so badly needs it?  First, accept the peace that Jesus offers by accepting Him.  Then, look for people that need peace.  They are all around.  Simply ask, how are you?  I mean, how are you really with all that is going on?  And listen, this is a great gift.  Then look for opportunities to invite them to the peace that only Jesus gives.  Finally, look for people of peace.  These are people disposed to listen to the good news about the peace that only comes from Jesus.  And may the peace of God be with you.

En 1978, Egipto e Israel firmaron un acuerdo de paz negociado por los Estados Unidos. En la firma, Jimmy Carter citó un versículo de la Biblia: “Bienaventurados los pacificadores, porque serán llamados hijos de Dios”. (Mateo 5:9). Fue una escena extraordinaria: un judío, un árabe y un cristiano de pie juntos celebrando la paz. Por supuesto, no duró, así como la Liga de Naciones fracasó después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, y las Naciones Unidas no han podido detener las guerras después de su inicio en 1945.

Vivimos en una época de problemas, división y estrés. ¿Dónde podemos encontrar la paz? Una persona me dijo que con tanta injusticia ni siquiera deberíamos estar buscando la paz, sino tratando de derribar el sistema maligno y reconstruirlo con algo mejor.

La paz es algo más que la falta de conflictos y problemas. La palabra hebrea “Shalom” es un saludo que transmite un deseo de bienestar, seguridad e integridad. “Salam” transmite el mismo concepto en árabe, al igual que “Eirene” en griego: La paz esté contigo. Ese es el significado cuando Jesús dice “mi paz os doy, no como el mundo da” (Juan 14:27).

Entonces, ¿cómo podemos trabajar por la paz en un mundo que tanto la necesita? Primero, acepta la paz que Jesús ofrece al creer en Él. Y busca a la gente que necesita paz. Están por todas partes. Simplemente pregunte, “¿cómo está? Quiero decir, ¿cómo estás realmente con todo lo que está pasando?” Y escucha, este es un gran regalo. Después busca oportunidades para invitarlos a la paz que sólo Jesús da. Por último, busquen personas de paz. Estas son personas dispuestas a escuchar las buenas noticias sobre la paz que sólo provienen de Jesús. Y que la paz de Dios esté con usted.
