There are times that it seems like we are walking across a desert with no water, like much of the last year dealing with COVID, rioting and the election chaos. There are at least a couple of ways of considering this. One is to focus on the desert. As the miles go by, thirst grows. There seems no end in sight. People die in the desert for lack of water. People are dying, not only physically but emotionally and spiritually, as the COVID crises continues. They won’t have their thirst quenched by looking for solutions from the desert. Even the best-intentioned scientists and politicians disappoint us.
The other, more helpful perspective is to lift our eyes. David cries out to God “in a dry and parched land where there is no water” (Ps 63:1). “My soul thirsts for God, the living God” (Ps 42:2). The Lord quenches our thirst, even in the desert. Jesus says “To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the water of life” (Revelation 21:6). There is no cost, I don’t have to strive for it or earn it. It is water of life, not death or depression. And only Jesus gives it. Only Jesus rose from the dead to offer real life to us. The circumstances may not change but when we fix my eyes our Him, we have peace and hope.

A veces parece que estamos caminando por un desierto sin agua, como gran parte del año pasado tratando con COVID, disturbios y el caos electoral. Hay al menos un par de maneras de considerar esto. Una es enfocarse en el desierto. A medida que pasan los kilómetros, crece la sed. Parece que no hay fin. La gente muere en el desierto por falta de agua. Se está muriendo, no sólo físicamente, sino emocionalmente y espiritualmente, a medida que continúa las crisis COVID. La sed está saciada buscando soluciones del desierto. Incluso los científicos y políticos mejor intencionados nos decepcionan.
La perspectiva más útil es levantar los ojos. David clama a Dios “en tierra seca y árida donde no hay agua” (Sal 63, 1). “Mi alma tiene sed de Dios, el Dios viviente” (Sal 42, 2). El Señor sacia nuestra sed, incluso en el desierto. Jesús dice: “Al que tiene sed, le daré gratuitamente de la fuente del agua de vida” (Apocalipsis 21:6). No tengo que esforzarme por ello o ganarlo. Es agua de vida, no muerte o depresión. Y sólo Jesús lo da. Sólo Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos para ofrecernos la vida real. Puede ser que las circunstancias no cambien, pero cuando fijamos los ojos en Él, tenemos paz y esperanza.
