Legacy / Legado

This week would have been my mom’s and dad’s birthdays, 95 and 98 years old.  My friends will remind me this means that I am old.  That occurred to me, but my reflections go deeper, to the legacy that parents leave, good or bad.  My parents were far from perfect, but they loved us deeply and showed love in multiple ways. 

My father was an alcoholic, and that left an imprint on us children.  He also traded his golf clubs for a fishing boat when I was young so that he could take me fishing and spend time with his children.  I loved him and appreciated him.  This led me to understand something of the love of our Father in heaven, imperfectly and incompletely, but it pointed the way. 

There is a reason that God reveals himself to us as Father.  He wants us to know that we are part of His family. (Ephesians 2:19) He is more than “Our Father in Heaven”, through Jesus He is Emmanuel, “God with us”. He is Father to the fatherless (Ps 68:5), so He is pleased when I go to Him as my Father.  I look to Him to guide me, and He does.  I feel his smile when He is pleased, and also sense when I am not the man He wants me to be.

The legacy I want to leave my sons is a life that points them to our Father in Heaven.

Legado

Esta semana habrían sido los cumpleaños de mi mamá y mi papá, de 95 y 98 años. Mis amigos me recordarán que esto significa que soy viejo. Eso se me ocurrió, pero mis reflexiones van más allá, hacia el legado que los padres dejan, bueno o malo. Mis padres estaban lejos de ser perfectos, pero nos amaban profundamente y mostraban amor de múltiples maneras.

Mi padre era alcohólico, y eso dejó una huella en los hijos. Pero también cambió sus palos de golf por una lanchita de pesca cuando yo era joven, para llevarnos a pescar y pasar tiempo con sus hijos. Lo amaba y lo apreciaba. Esto me llevó a entender algo del amor de nuestro Padre celestial, imperfectamente e incompletamente, pero señaló el camino.

Hay una razón por la que Dios se revela a nosotros como Padre. Quiere que sepamos que somos parte de Su familia. (Efesios 2:19) Él es más que “Nuestro Padre Celestial”, por medio de Jesús, es Emmanuel, “Dios con nosotros”. Él es Padre de los sin padre (Sal 68:5), así que Él está complacido cuando voy a Él como mi Padre. Busco a Él para guiarme, y Él lo hace. Siento su sonrisa cuando Él está complacido, y también siento cuando yo no soy el hombre que Él quiere que sea.

El legado que quiero dejar a mis hijos es una vida que les lleva a nuestro Padre Celestial.
