Your first reaction to the title of this blog may be that there is a misspelled a word, it should be “New Year’s Resolution”. That’s when we resolve to do something in the coming year. Synonyms for “resolution” include determination, tenacity and firmness. There is the implication that I am going to do something different that is going to improve my life, or that of someone else. This can be a very good thing; I’m certainly not saying that we should not make resolutions to improve our lives.
The “revolution” is to recognize that I can’t do the resolution perfectly, whatever it is. Even a resolution to be more intimately connected to Jesus Christ is a great thought, but I inevitably revert to bad reactions, like when I get cut off in traffic or hit a bad golf shot. Paul said that the things he wants to do, he doesn’t do, and the things that he hates he does. (Romans 7:15) If Paul can’t keep his resolutions, what hope do I have?
The truths that follow in Romans 8 are essential. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:1) and nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:39). Even when I mess up on my resolutions my Father in Heaven loves me. The peace I have with God from being reconciled to Him through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ frees me from a performance-based model.
I make my resolutions knowing that even my best efforts will come up short. But I’m encouraged to keep going, to keep working on them, because I’m loved by Almighty God who is a Wonderful Counselor, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace, (Is. 9:6) regardless of my performance. That is a revolution!
Mi Revolución del Año Nuevo
La primera reacción al título de este blog puede ser que hay una palabra mal escrita, debería ser “Resolución” del Año Nuevo. Es entonces cuando resolvemos hacer algo en el próximo año. Los sinónimos de “resolución” incluyen determinación, tenacidad y firmeza. Existe la implicación de que voy a hacer algo diferente que va a mejorar mi vida, o la de otra persona. Esto puede ser algo muy bueno; Ciertamente no estoy diciendo que no debamos hacer resoluciones para mejorar nuestras vidas.
La “revolución” es reconocer que no puedo hacer la resolución perfectamente, sea lo que sea. Incluso una resolución de estar más íntimamente conectado con Jesucristo es un gran pensamiento, pero inevitablemente vuelvo a las malas reacciones, como cuando me cortan en el tráfico o hago un mal tiro de golf. Pablo dijo que las cosas que quiere hacer, no las hace, y las cosas que odia las hace. (Romanos 7:15) Si Pablo no puede cumplir sus resoluciones, ¿qué esperanza tengo yo?
Las verdades que siguen en Romanos 8 son esenciales. No hay condenación en Cristo Jesús (Romanos 8:1) y nada puede separarnos del amor de Dios en Jesucristo (Romanos 8:39). Incluso cuando me equivoco en mis resoluciones, mi Padre Celestial me ama. La paz que tengo con Dios al reconciliarme con Él a través de la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo me libera de un modelo basado en el desempeño.
Hago mis resoluciones sabiendo que incluso mis mejores esfuerzos se quedarán cortos. Pero me animo a seguir adelante, a seguir trabajando en ellos, porque soy amado por Dios Todopoderoso que es un Consejero Maravilloso, Padre Eterno y Príncipe de Paz, (Is. 9:6) independientemente de mis fallas. ¡Eso es una revolución!
